How does it affect you that the Trump Administration is slashing funding for fighting diseases around the world like measles, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and more? The simple answer: that Ebola patient in Uganda is only a plane ride away from the United States. Which is why we began funding global health in the first place, and at levels that dwarf every other country.
So now what?
To answer that question, and many others that I and our viewers have about this urgent situation, I welcomed the world’s most renowned virus hunter, Dr. Ian Lipkin. For over 40 years, he has advised everyone from the Centers for Disease Control and National Institutes of Health to the World Health Organization and the Food and Drug Administration. He heads up what might be the longest-titled organization I’ve ever heard of: the WHO Collaborating Center on Diagnostics, Surveillance, and Immunotherapeutics for Emerging Infectious and Zoonotic Diseases. Whew! And he’s a Distinguished Professor at Columbia University.
