Docology: Allergy Explosion

Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, you rarely heard any kids talking about food allergies. Today, it’s everywhere – affecting six million children in the U.S., or about two kids in every classroom. Prompting warning labels about peanuts, tree nuts, sesame and more on packaged foods and restaurant menus.

It’s great that awareness is growing – but so is the problem. Food allergies increased by 50% between 2007 and 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Why are food allergies becoming so common? And what can we do about it?

Today’s guest is someone who’s been at the forefront of this issue for decades. Dr. Scott Sicherer is Director of the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, and author of “The Complete Guide to Food Allergies in Adults and Children.” He’s also my child’s allergy doctor, so I can vouch for his expertise.
