Ep15: What Fuels Chronic Disease?

Did you know that practically every cell in your body has its own little power plant? It’s called the mitochondria and It comes with its own wiring system, sort of like a tiny fuse box, making sure the cell runs smoothly and doesn’t short-circuit. But if the wiring misfires or the fuse blows, then it can lead to all kinds of trouble: cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and even the natural process of aging itself.

But new research indicates that it may soon be possible to perform mitochondrial transplants to help organs that are failing, which would open up a powerful new way to improve our well-being.

In this episode of Docology, Dr. Doug Wallace, knows this cellular power plant better than almost anyone. He’s been one of the pioneers of mitochondrial genetics for nearly four decades. Over the years, he’s not only explored how this system works, and how it sometimes doesn’t, but he’s also used it to trace the incredible journey of how humans spread out across the globe, all the way from our origins in Africa.

Take a look and let us know what you think! And remember: Docology subscribers can join our tapings and ask their own questions of me and my expert guests.
